Restaurante De Castro Elias review

grilled octopus

One of the great things about Lisbon must be their wide selection of top rated restaurants. Going to Restaurante de Castro Elias was certainly one of my highlights from my first weekend trip to Lisbon.

You can choose between the tapas menu or three course meal option. Both options are reasonably priced and offer a range of choices. I went with two Lisboetas, Lisbon natives who had heard of the restaurant and were keen to try it out.

As the restaurant comes highly recommended and has won many accolades, it is best to make a reservation. It was full to capacity when we went so I’m lucky my friends had already booked in advance.

The atmosphere was what I’d refer to as ‘IKEA cool’ in fact I think some of the decor and tables may have come directly from the mighty Swedish retail giant. Something about sitting in a cosy restaurant surrounded by furniture you probably have in your own living room made the experience even nicer and instantly made you feel comfortable in your surroundings. The very friendly and knowledgeable waiting staff further added to the sense of familiarity.

I had the grilled octopus with potatoes. Wow. Just delicious. Cooked to perfection and beautifully presented without coming across as pretentious. I wish I’d taken more photos whilst I was in there but I was so blown away with getting stuck into the food and with conversing with my brilliant hosts that it slipped my mind. Well, perfect excuse for going back for a second visit!

Definitely worth a visit, you can book your reservation online via their website. Google can translate if your Portuguese isn’t up to date!
